Our School Pookkalam Competition

Indian School Al Ghubra, Principal Mrs.Papri Ghosh and Teachers made a great effort in implementing tradition and rituals of the festivals of India into the student by organising a competition in School. They should be appreciated for the extraordinary efforts of the Principal and Teachers.....The Asianet team with Reporter Binu was also there to make sure the rest of the world see the wonderful Onam Festival and Pookkalam Competition in School..Athapookkalam is very special ritual of Onam, which is a traditional festival of Kerala. With out the differentiations of cast creed and status every one around the world celebrates Onam, where ever they are located.Pookkalam is a floral pattern made in front of the house and beautifully decorated with flowers.'Pookkalam' consists of two words; 'Poov' meaning flower and 'Kalam' means colour sketches on the ground. It is considered auspicious to prepare Pookkalam, also known as 'Atha-Poo' during the festival of Onam. Its Known as ‘Onapookkalam’, it is a carpet made out of the gathered blossoms with one or two varieties of foliage of differing tints pinched up into little pieces to serve the decorator's purpose. It is a beautiful work of art accomplished with a delicate touch and a highly artistic sense of ton ... But in Gulf , we are deprived of the mountains of flowers we could buy and collect , like home land Kerala. Here we substitute it with the second best choice, of Dry Coconut Powder, which is dyed with different colours.
